Coaching a Brigade Headquarters Through a Major Field Exercise

Project Overview

Service: Team coaching

Sector: Defence

Year: 2026

Duration: Two weeks

The Challenge

A brigade headquarters engaged me as an embedded coach through a multi-week collective training activity. The command team needed to know where the HQ's systems were and weren't keeping pace with the tempo of the fight.

My Approach

Using structured observation alongside the team's own reflective practice, I helped the command team identify gaps in information flow, planning integration and communications resilience.

Where the team's self-assessment and my external observation converged, the command team could act with high confidence. Where they diverged, the difference surfaced blind spots worth deliberate attention.

The Outcome

A Forward Action Plan of prioritised, owned and timelined actions the command team could act on immediately, rather than a generic list of lessons learned. The HQ had a clear, owned roadmap to execute before its next major training cycle, not just a report to file away.
