Building an International Staff Exchange Program From Scratch

Project Overview

Service: Program design

Sector: Energy

Year: 2019

Duration: Four weeks

The Challenge

A major Australian energy distributor's CEO wanted a repeatable way to select, develop and deploy staff into exchange opportunities with peer energy distributors overseas. The program was intended as both a development pathway and a retention lever for talented people. The company had never run anything like it before, and the planning spanned everything from candidate selection through to international tax implications, safety audits of the overseas site, and the logistics of getting people ready to go.

My Approach

Drawing on my military deployment planning background, I worked embedded with a cross-functional project team spanning legal, operations, HR and technical areas. I also remained the primary point of contact with the overseas entity and drove decision making throughout.

The Outcome

A fully codified process covering every phase: pre-deployment, deployment and return. It included a bridging program to prepare staff for the overseas entity's own safety and operating procedures. Because the approach was designed to be repeatable rather than one-off, the company now has a process it can run again for any future exchange location, not just the one it was built for.
